The Camwhore Paradise » La Virginia Resort and Hotel in Batangas

We usually have a 3-days 2-nights annual company outing but this year, we only had a 1-day tour at La Virginia Resort and Hotel last April 9.

The resort is in Mataas na kahoy, Batangas which is a two hour ride from Manila. It is set in the highlands of Batangas which offers a wonderful view of the Taal Volcano and the lake and plantations surrounding it. It is perfect for barkada trips and company outings because they offer several cottage accomodations to fit the needs of anywhere between 2 to 12 persons. Each cottage has its own set of unique ambience and character. Some cottages even provide cooking.

Tip: Always bring your camera because the place is littered with lots of cool garden statues, figurines and amazing view.

Bad Experience: We have a bad experience regarding water supply. Since it is on the highlands, the water pressure can’t reach the top floors of the rooms. My tip is to get rooms on the ground floor or check with the resort staff about water supply.

Things you can do:
Swimming, basketball, outdoor badminton, senti-walk, relax and unwind, take pictures of the garden statues, camwhoring,

Are you living your life as an adventure?

I consider my life as a continuous adventure of risk-taking, contentment and successes. But it wasn’t always that way. During high school, I sensed that there was something bigger in life – something exciting and fulfilling – but I didn’t know how to go about getting it. Growing up in a small town in Occidental Mindoro where the norm was waiting for the day to be over, I strive to have a different way of life. I try my best to be an achiever – salutatorian of my high school class, a full government scholar during college and now striving to finish Graduate school. I’m not trying to brag here, it’s just that I thought that worldly success alone would bring me what I am searching for.

But after seven years of working as an employee, I have to face the hard truth that I am not on the journey I wished and planned. Though my work was sometimes exciting, I still wasn’t living life as an adventure. I always dreamed of being a professional mountaineer, a fiction book author, professional photographer and a teacher with a PhD. However, life doesn’t always go how we wanted it to be.

Sometimes, when I lazily wake up every morning, forcing myself to work, I had these funny thoughts, with a flash of miserable lucidity, that I was just fooling myself, but I did nothing. And for many years, I did nothing but drift. Like a driven leaf, I just do everything expected or demanded of me.

The deterioration of our ambitions

I remembered a phrase by a poet or maybe a Greek philosopher I read somewhere, something like “He who desires, but acts not, breeds pestilence.” I was a mass of aspirations and dreams unacted on, of fantasies as unreal as those that awed me during childhood which was mostly spent in the farms. I always wanted to go somewhere, to travel the world perhaps, but suddenly I found myself paralyzed in a rut at the age of twenty-nine – making payments on an apartment room, receiving bonuses – (sometimes at the mercy of the management), going from my boarding house to office, to gym and back to house, going to occasional barkada out-of-town trip but mostly just imagining luxury vacations, daydreaming, escaping through books, blogging and surfing the net.

Working life itself was routine and habit: morning rush, breakfast at the office pantry, check e-mails, morning work routine, buying lunch at Lola Payat and Lola Simangot’s carinderia (that’s the name we gave to our nearby office carinderia), exchanging jokes about sex, clitorology and gossips at lunch, afternoon work routine and a quick barkada chismis before leaving office. Office friendships was surely based on that dismal reality which cost us nothing to share the workplace and life’s irony with which we viewed the mediocrity of our lives and the deterioration of our ambitions. In a company, where there is no such thing as internal career advancement but merely a training ground, we see in the other the mirror of our insufficiency. With identical correctness, we carried out our duties as employees, always voicing out the overwhelming sarcasm of our conversations - blaming HR, attacking Healthcare policies, complaining about unjustified salaries, etc. – but always never intended for a true complaint (maybe that’s how the corporate world works).

The curious case of Mang Frank

I remember Mang Frank (may he rest in peace). Funny old guy, started as a Recruitment Assistant, served a forced retirement (still in the same position) after serving almost half of his working years in this company and died broke the following year. I imagine him telling me, while sitting in front of his favorite old noisy typewriter: “Don’t get stuck in this rut, don’t let what happened to me happen to you, get out while you can – don’t cave in!

I am hired in this company as his replacement but I actually avoided him on his last few weeks because I was so bored with the tedium of his increasingly disjointed stories, his detailed account of the intrigues and tricks he was victim of in the office and his very detailed sexual escapades. The years went by, I am just thankful I am not in that position anymore but still in the same group of companies. I go to work every morning, pay my monthly bills and trying to stretch the money till the end of every month, which is not always successful – life of a typical bachelor eh? So I was considering looking for a second job to have more savings. In this way I will not give up all the plans that seemed so courageous when I started working: preparing myself for a better career, say, university professor or researcher in some institute. But I didn’t have the time or the will, and my free evenings got away from me without me noticing.

I know what the ghost of Mang Frank would say: “What are you doing? Why haven’t you got out of here? How many more years are you going to take it?
Once in a while I did go somewhere, but most of the time things doesn’t always go as planned. There are always set-backs and a lot of things to consider.

Life as an Adventure – One step at a time

Then it hit me. This is the adventure. This. This up and down, success and failure, back and forth – all of it is the adventure. All the time that I was looking for what I want, I was learning what it was to live a life of adventure. It wasn’t about being perfect, doing things right, receiving big salary, getting rich and having wild success with no downside. It was risking decisions, stumbling and falling short of my expectations as well as enjoying and building on my own successes.

As the famous Filipino salawikain said, “Habang maiksi ang kumot, matuto kang mamaluktot. Kung mahaba na at malapad saka na mag-unat unat [Refers to situations when resources are scarce, one should learn to be thrift and adapt].
My adventure was really just beginning – I’ll just have to take it, one step at a time.

P.S.
How about you, are you living your life as an adventure?
Are you satisfied and happy with your current situation?

Sleeping With Wet Hair Can Cause Blindness and Other Absurdities

My grandmother has this funny and bizarre collection of health ideas that I do not know whether some of it is true – but I’m sure most of it are just local absurdities. Maybe it is because of information deficiency and the belief in albularyo or local quack doctor.

These health beliefs always remind me what it was like to grow up in the province, fascinated and horrified by the adult world. Right now, it is really reassuring that the things I used to believe weren't so strange after all because I discovered that, somehow, most provinces across the Philippines, and even other countries, also have their own or same health legends. And the most common – sleeping with wet hair can cause blindness.

Then again, even communities in Metro Manila and other cities, especially urban poor communities, still believe on these health legends. Although city people have access to electricity and the mass media, much of their health information can be misleading inaccurate or distorted.

These beliefs are really amusing so I take time on finding little facts about it by doing a little research to satisfy my itchy curiosity. I’m not an expert in medicine and my notes are still subject to medical scrutiny.

Here are some of the popular health-beliefs in our town in Mindoro and my personal notes:

1. Sleeping with wet hair can cause blindness - In our province, it is said that if you sleep with wet hair, first you will be cross-eyed, then you will go blind. Meaning, if you happen to wake up in the middle of your sleep with your wet hair, you will only be crossed eyed – and you know what, you are considered lucky -- because if you sleep longer you will be blind.
  • My Notes: According to John C Hagan III, MD, an Ophthalmologist affiliated with the American Academy of Ophthalmology, that belief is totally untrue. There is no connection what-so-ever between wet hair and eye problems. Why would you want to sleep with wet hair anyway?
2. Urine of frogs causes warts or kulugoKokak Kokak! No way. I love playing with frogs when I was a kid, what I got are bruises from chasing them – not warts.
  • My Notes: The cause of the typical wart is not a frog. It happens because the wart virus finds a body with a weak immune system.
3. Eating too much magoes can cause bungang-araw or prickly heat rashes – I’m not really sure about this one. What I personally experience is that I got itchy lips and throat when I accidentally ate a portion of that pico mango fruit rind. Despite the fact that mango can be allergic to a few people, it is still a healthy fruit and I cannot help myself eating this fruit – especially those overripe big kinalabaw mangoes, hmm yummy.
  • My Notes: Well, the problem is that mango tree sap, and the rind of the fruit, contains urushiol, the same chemical the poison ivy plant produces. Some people experience skin rashes especially in the lips upon contact with the sap or the skins of the fruit. Well, you can’t be that hungry that you want to eat even the mango skin – that’s reserved for the backyard pigs you know.
4. Eating grilled lizard can cure asthma - The usual practice is to grill a lizard until it turned to charcoal black, grind it then mix it to some juice or coffee so you can't taste what a lizard really taste like. Others just add a whole lizard when cooking rice. Yaikks!
  • My Notes: Some experts say that asthma can not be cured. Of course eating lizard is not based on a prescription or medical advice, but at least they believe in alternative medicine. We just really don’t know its medicinal effects though. In the meantime, I suggest we should require all lizards to have them labeled with “No approved therapeutic claims.” - until such time that a proper study was conducted. Any objections, Godzilla?
5. Washing hands after ironing clothes can cause pasma - Pasma refers to a folk illness unique to the Filipino culture with symptoms of hand tremors, sweaty palms, numbness and pains attributed to an interaction of "init" (heat) and "lamig" (cold).
A rather amusing variation on this belief is the idea that condoms cause "pasma" allegedly because the rubber aggravates the body’s heat. Ha ha ha, Maybe an impotent Catholic priest, who is fighting against contraceptives and the Reproductive Health (RH) Bill, started this rumor. LOL
  • My Notes: Pasma is not described in medical textbooks, discussed in medical schools, or generally recognized by contemporary medical science.
6. A lady eating twin bananas will give birth to twins - Eating twin fruits like double almonds and bananas were thought to increase the likelihood of twins.
  • My Notes: None – I don’t bother googling this one, because obviously, this is ridiculous. Just consult your local manghihilot to explain this to you in detail or perhaps try visiting the psychic readers in Quiapo if you want more information.
7. Brushing hair 100 times before bedtime can make it softer and shiny - This is the old tale, which claims that brushing your hair a lot, 100 to 200 strokes a day, is good for the hair.
  • My Notes: According to the basic hair care article posted in Mercury Drug Website, we have about 100,000 strands of hairs on our head. Each grows for two to six years. It's normal to shed some 50 to 100 hair strands a day. When hair falls out, a new strand eventually replaces it.
  • Their Advise: Don't put strain on your hair strands by brushing too much or too vigorously. The story about brushing your hair 100 times a night is not true. Overbrushing the hair simply makes it brittle and may cause the scalp to produce excess oil.
8. Eating ants can improve singing - So finally, Celine Dion and Charice Pempemco’s secret is finally out. Sautéed ants are behind their angelic singing voice? Well, if it’s true, Willie Revillame and Paris Hilton should’ve done that two decades ago so that they wouldn’t have to be a trying hard singer.
  • My Notes: Maybe an old lunatic singer, during one of her epileptic seizures, started sharing her secret about eating ants to improve her voice, her die-hard fans heard her – and from there, the legend goes. Z and Princess Bala will not love this.
9. Drinking seawater can cure cough/colds - In our province in Mindoro, whenever we got cough, my mother will let us have our sea swimming early in the morning and would encourage us to take a gulp of seawater to cure our cough. Of course seawater in our small town is really clear and clean unlike the yukkiiee toxic Manila Bay.

But wait, based on my fact finding spree, this one, which I thought was also an absurd belief is amazingly has some truth in it. Well at least I found out that not all beliefs in my list are just absurdities.
  • My Notes: According to a Czech research [Efficacy of Isotonic Nasal Wash (Seawater) in the Treatment and Prevention of Rhinitis in Children], seawater spray cures kids colds. It may be that the salt water has a simple mechanical effect of clearing mucus, or it could be that trace elements in the water play some more significant role, though the exact reason why such a solution works is not known, said Dr. Ivo Slapak and colleagues at the Teaching Hospital of Brno in the Czech Republic.
I’m sure you also know of some health myths – like jumping on New Year’s eve to make you taller?

Hmmm, what else…
Please share what you have in mind in the comments section below.

Never Wish for A Longer Dick

I don't know why the "male small dick panic" is still an issue nowadays -- Maybe the advent of sexual consumerist culture is to blame. It is a universal assumption, and I say just an assumption, that men know more or less where they stand relative to their peers when it comes to dick size.

Quick Facts (and of course you already know about this):
Average penis size when flaccid – 4 inches
Average penis size when erect – 5.7 inches
It’s a bit bigger than a gorrilla’s 3-inch erection, but then there’s blue whale, the world’s largest mammal that has, a goddamn ten-foot erection.
Some men worry that dick size matters to women and most women vigorously denied that it doesn’t (but I guess some of them secretly wish it’s bigger) – but as they always say “It’s the performance not the size,” so to improve performance we need more practice -- practice makes perfect right? LOL

And of course communication is very important -- because men are from Mars and women are from Venus communicating man’s wishes to a woman is sometimes confusing. Look at this:

So, if you’re talking to women, especially about your sexual fantasies, BE VERY SPECIFIC.

And of course as Lao Tzu said, “Be Content with what you have; rejoice in the way things are. When you realize there is nothing lacking, the whole world belongs to you.”

The Chick’s Lesson from Shit

This story is inspired by our little farm in Mindoro during my childhood days.
Hope you’ll like it. Here’s my story:

One windy afternoon, as the mother hen and her chicks are hurrying to return to the farmer's nipa hut to avoid the sudden gusts of amihan (or the strong trade winds), one of the chicks decided he doesn’t want to leave the farm yet. “You are all cowards,” he said to the other chicks. “After all, all I have to do is hide under the talahib grass to avoid the sudden gusts of amihan.”

Soon, however, strong amihan winds blow and he realized he cannot make it to the talahib grass to hide. The first wind gust throws him nearby a rushing river with grazing carabaos. He realized that, just another wind blow will throw him in the river and will mean instant drowning.

He just closed his eyes just as he heard the coming wind, buzzing like bees. Just seconds before the strong wind came; a carabao walked by and shits directly over the chick. The carabao’s shit covered the chick’s body, saving his life.

He was very happy to be alive and he happily chirped and tweeted, until a passing eagle noticed him. The eagle quickly do a deadly aerial dive towards him, clawed him out of the shit and ate him.

So what’s my point here?
  • Well first, those who throw shits on us are not necessarily our enemy.
  • Second, not everyone who help us get out of the mess is necessarily our friends.

Do you agree? Please share you story on the comments section.

Woohhh!!! I Won the Philippine Mega Lotto! I am now a Millionaire!

I can't believe it, I AM NOW A MILLIONAIRE!!!

I asked a friend yesterday how to play the Mega Lotto 6/45 which is a six-number combination chosen from a lot of numbers from 1 to 45 and the odds of getting all six winning numbers is really what you will call luck. I'm really not into gambling and this is actually my first time in trying my luck in Philippine lotto and I'm just bored so I bought a ticket.

I just picked these number at random 30-06-36-11-17-03 and when I checked the winning number today, I can't believe it is the exact number! I checked and re-checked and re-checked... It's really the winning number!

What to do with my 13 Million Pesos

Well I don't have the money yet. It's still holiday and offices will not be open until Monday but I am now thinking of what to do with the money. Maybe save it in the bank while planning a good business.

Of course to celebrate my luck, I'll throw a party and EVERYONE IS INVITED!!!
